Dynamics of university partnership: Northern (Arctic)
Federal University and Haute Alsace University (France)

NArFU and the Haute Alsace University in Mulhouse, France (UHA) will soon celebrate the 15th anniversary of cooperation.
This partnership dates back to 2000 when an agreement on cooperation was signed thanks to the initiative of Gérard Binder. The same year, the first lecturers from the Pomor State University started teaching Russian language to the UHA students. Since that time, each year about 100 students study Russian in Mulhouse.

The development of cooperation went through promoting contacts between the universities and expanding their common interests. Students from Arkhangelsk come to the Haute Alsace University on a short visit, take part in the Festival of languages and attend classes, and UHA teachers organize a week seminar for the teachers of French of 62 Arkhangelsk and the Arkhangelsk Region. Russian language and culture studies are included in the Master programme “International Management and Cross-cultural Communication”, strengthening the position of Russian language course in the UHA.

In 2011, the agreement on cooperation was renewed and academic exchanges were continued and enlarged. Thus, dual Masters’ Program « Comparative Literature Studies: Russian-French Literary Relations » lauched in September 2013 gives a unique opportunity for students to study during the second year and write the Master’s Thesis in Mulhouse. In 2013 NArFU introduced the TANDEM method, key concept of the UHA NovaTris project aimed at cross-cultural professional communication development.
Cooperation was established between the NArFU Institute for Energy and Transport and the UHA Risk and Environment Management Laboratory; a thesis joint supervision started.

Thus, despite the changes in administrative staff of both universities, their cooperation remains progressive and fruitful. Since 2013 NArFU is reaffirmed as one the priorities of UHA’s international cooperation.
